What is a tree?
A tree is a large flowering plant whose stem and branches are made of hard woody material.
Do all trees have branches?
Yes. All trees have branches.
What is a coniferous tree?
Coniferous trees belong to a group of plants called ‘naked seeded’ plants. Coniferous trees have a unique branching pattern in which the size of the branches becomes smaller as the height increases giving the trees a conical shape. Example: the Christmas tree.
What is a bonsai?
Bonsai is a dwarf tree created artificially by gardeners. The art of bonsai making was first discovered in Japan. Many species of trees can be made into bonsais.
What is a tree-of-life?
People in different parts of the world believed that certain trees had the power to make humans immortal. Others believed that some trees had the ability to create new life. These beliefs led to some species of trees being identified as the tree-of-life. In India a species of tree popularly called ‘putranjiva’ is considered as a tree-of-life.
What is a hardwood tree?
Trees grow under different climatic conditions. Depending on the temperature and rainfall some areas allow trees to grow throughout the year while in others trees grow only during some seasons. Trees that grow only during some seasons tend to develop wood that is very hard. Such trees are called hardwood trees. Example: Indian Teak.
What is a willow tree?
Willow trees are those that grow in colder climate. Willow wood is durable and is used in making cricket bats.
What is a silk cotton tree?
This is a large tropical tree that produces pods containing fine silky cotton. The cotton is very light and is used in making mattresses, pillows and life-jackets.
Which tree is called the Nilagiri tree?
Nilagiri tree is one of the many species of Eucalypts introduced from Australia. In India this tree is common in the Nilagiri Hills where the fragrant oil is extracted. It is also called ‘thaiilamaram’ in Tamil.

A tree is a long-lived giant plant. It gives shade and provides the vital oxygen needed for the survival of humans and other animals. Many trees yield edible fruits.

A tree can live for many years. Species such as the Banyan tree may live more than 400 years.

Tall trees are found in the tropical rainforests. However the tallest trees are the red woods of North America. Red woods are a type of coniferous trees.
