Description: A dainty hawk, ashy grey above, white below with a black streak above the eye. Wings are black which are conspicuously seen when resting. When resting wings extend above the tail.
Distribution and status: It is distributed throughout the Indian Peninsula. It is common in its habitat.
Habitat : It is active during day time and inhabits well wooded country and cultivation.
Habits: Perches itself on a well elevated point before pounces on the unsuspecting prey that moves on the ground. Flight is slow and deliberate with few wing beats.
Food. It feeds on locusts, crickets, mice, lizards etc.
Life cycle: The birds engage in aerial courtship displays which involve high circling flight and ritualized maneuvers mid-air.Nesting throughout the year. Nest is shabby like a crow’s nest often in small trees. Sometimes the nest is found with roots and grass. Eggs are 3 or 4 in number are yellowish white densely blotched with brownish red. Both sexes share in domestic duties.
Role in the environment. Important predator of rodents in the country side. A handsome kite of the cultivation in India.
