Description: Size smaller and slender than a house crow but with a long tail. Adult male black with bluish metallic tinge. Female’s dark brown with yellowish spots throughout. Eyes are crimson red
Distribution and status: Common throughout the India subcontinent. Resident and locally migratory.
Habitat: Inhabits trees near human habitation, orchards and plantation
Habits: Arboreal. It is commonly associated with human beings hence could be considered as commensal with man. Flight is straight with short beats
Food: Largely fruits and berries also caterpillar and insects.
Life cycle: Nesting mainly in April and August, coincident with other normal bird like house crow and raven. The eggs are similar to crow’s egg. This is a brood parasite of crows that is lays its egg in a crows nests and the crow think that the hatchling is its and broods it until the bird is fit enough to fly
