Tamil Name: Saani kaili
Description: This is one of the smallest of the Indian barbs. It has an olive green to silvery colouration with a golden black eyespot near the base of the tail. There may also be additional parts on the dorsal fin and the anal fin. The fin is often orange or yellow in colour. They dwell as shoals in small pools, tanks and streams.
Habitat & Distribution: It is lives in open wells ponds, streams, lakes , and rain water pools. It also occurs and breeds even in small water bodies. It is an active substrate browser. It is very tolerant to salt and often recorded in brackish water. t prefers water covered with algae and aquatic plants. . It is found in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India.
Note: Although it is not popular it can be used in the aquarium. It is peaceful when kept with other fish. This fish is used as a bait when angling for larger fish like Snake heads
