Description: Adults grow upto a size of 75cm normally they measure upto 40 cm. This is a large and well known species of Snake heads identified by its dark coloration, white belly and elongated tail. The young fishes have a dark spot at the rear end of the dorsal fins. The overall coloration tends to be greenish with spots and stripes especially on the fins.
Habitat & distribution: It occurs in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar till China and Sri Lanka. If prefers to live in stagnant waters i.e. tanks, lakes and large ditches. It prefers deep and still waters.
Note: The Striped snake head is solitary and aggressive by nature. This species is also predatory. They also feed o other fishes. Females mature after one year. Adults breed during the rains. The eggs are amber colored and over a thousand are laid in nest of weeds built with a tunnel like hollow.
