Scientific Name: Ficus religiosa
Tamil Name: Arasa maram
Description: A large tree 20-30 m long. Also known as Peepal, this is a deciduous tree with a sparse canopy. Leaves are simple, heart shaped with a long extended tip and a long stake. Fruits are small, pink, purple or black.
Habitat and distribution: Native to eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia.
Note: Ficus religiosa tree is considered sacred by the followers of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. During the fruiting season birds come and have a feast of the fruits. Ficus religiosa is used in traditional medicine
