Scientific Name Azadirachta indica
Tamil Name: Vembu
Description: Large sized tree up to 10m tall. It is deciduous with single compound leaves. Leaflets somewhat sickle shaped. Flowers are white in bunches. Seeds are smaller and twisted with long tips, saw like margins. Fruits are yellow when ripe.
Habitat and distribution: Native to India. Neem is worshiped as a medicinal plant throughout the country especially in South India. There is lots cultural significance attached to this tree.
Note: During the fruiting season fruits are fed on by birds such as crows that help in their dispersal of seeds. Neem leaves are an important source of remedy for several illnesses.
