Scientific Name: Solanum trilobatum
Tamil Name: Thoodhuvalai
Description: This is a thorny creeper which bears violet flowers. The prickly climber has hooked prickles throughout, including the leaves. It has flowers are purple in color. Flowering and fruiting season is in January to August.
Habitat and distribution: It occurs in dry deciduous forests. The plant is a thorny shrub widely distributed in Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Southern India and Sri Lanka. In Southern India it has been observed on roadsides and wastelands.
Note:Solanum trilobatum is an herb used to treat the common cold, cough and asthma. .In Southern India this plant has been used extensively in Sidda medicine; Leaves are 3-5 cm long. The herb can be stored in powdered form, by drying the leaves under shade and making a powder out of it. It is often cooked in most houses in Southern India.
