Tamil Name : Silanthi
Description: This is the common house spider. Legs are long and slim. Pholcids is the family of long-legged spiders which construct loose tangled webs.. They have six or eight eyes. Where eight eyes are present, the anterior median pair is small while the rest are set in two groups of three. The jaws are fused at the base.
Distribution and status: Throughout the tropics. Found indoors. Common
Habitat: It is found in dusty and dark corners of the house. Under covered drains. Also found on mud walls in gardens and countryside.
Habits: Under a microscope, ring-like impressions are discernible on the long and apparently flexible tarsi (the last segment of the leg). Some of them are responsible for the “cobwebs” at neglected corners of buildings. They hang upside down in the webs and when disturbed, will vibrate themselves so vigorously that they blur themselves in the eyes of the intruder. They could be seen moving about on the ground and walls with dancing movement of its legs hence the name Daddy long legged spider.
Food: Feeds on small insects that get caught in the cow webs.
Life cycle: Eggs are held together by a few strands of silk and carried by the mother
Role in the environment : This is one of the commensal species of spiders associated with man. Though the cobweb is messy it can catch a variety of insects including mosquitoes.
