Scientific Name: Crocothemis servilla
Tamil Name: Thumbi
Description: A medium sized blood red or reddish yellow dragonfly. Face is blood red. Eyes are blood red above, purple on the sides.
Distribution and status: Peninsular, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Indo china
Habitat : This dragonfly is usually found in grasslands and other similar open habitats
Habits : This dragonfly perches on aquatic weeds. Dragonfly nymphs are shorter and bulkier, and the gills are located inside the abdomen than the damselflies. The dragonfly nymph expands and contracts its abdomen to move water over its gills, and can squeeze the water out rapidly for a short burst of underwater jet propulsion.
Food : The main diet of adult odonates consists of small insects. The order odonata belong to dragonflies and Damselflies.
Life cycle : Breeds in marshes, Ponds and lakes.
Role in the environment : Though the Indian odonat fauna is well documented especially species there is little information available on ecology of the vast majority of the species.
